The Hermit
I am slowly becoming better acquainted with my housemates in Asgard. I have only personally met Alice (as she is my roommate) and Nix, but he is currently nowhere to be found. By the grace of the unGods, I hope he is well wherever he may be. I am left to assume he has gone for a lengthy swim.

The others are a silent fellowship. I thought I was a reserved soul, and now I find that I can hardly tolerate multiple introverts in one house. Will this lack of open communication hinder us in our quests here? There is an abundance of concern in me. What if the others begin to disappear?

Why must everyone disappear?

Fear is a useless emotion.

I believe I shall go for a walk.

Man, I HOPE no one else disappears!

Yeah, I see what ya mean. I never talked a lot to people back home, so this all is still new to me. I've roomed with strangers before, but not so many and not like this.

Indeed, it would be preferable.

Yes, I understand you. And it makes matters worse when we are almost expected to get along. Apart, we are easily broken. But I may count that I have a friend in you.

Yeah, you can. I haven't had a lotta people count on me before, but...

We count on each other! That is what friends do, is it not?

Yes. It's a real nice... change, to have friends here.

I totally understand this fear of yours.

Being alone is one of the worst things that can happen to you.

Yes, it is true. It is a maddening torture. While this is a new, wondrous adventure, we are left with so many unanswered questions.

I do apologize, but I don't think we've met. My name is Blythe. Who might you be?

All too true.

The name's Jazz. *bows and gives a virtual kiss on Blythe's hand* Charmed to make your acquaintance, my lady.

Oh, my, what a charming fellow you are! I am equally, if not more, charmed to make your acquaintance, Jazz.

May I ask who you left behind? Or who left you?

It's easier to count those that remained and that's not many. War will do that to you.

*shrugs*

I'm used to it. Though I think here my services as spy with a speciality for cloak-and-dagger assassinations will not be as needed.

Used to it, truly? That breaks my heart. Even as an officer, war is never what you want. But I hope you're right, that your specialities will not be used here.

It's what we're made for, even though we did other things before we started fighting.

You realize I'm on the other team, right?

How sad...

Oh, yes, I did know. However, I do believe we must judge one's character over one's team. People deserve at least that much respect. You sound like a kind man; I have no current reason to fear you.

One piece of advice, my dear: Never, ever trust someone who would kill you without a second glance. These people might have a good character, but they'll always do what is necessary.

You should be afraid. Very afraid.

Introverts? I guess I got used to that. See, back in South Ashfield Heights, everybody just seemed to keep to themselves. Poor Mr. Townshend disappeared and only Miss Galvin really noticed... and me, once she told me.

And I... I never really know how to talk to people, so I'm one of your introverts all right. I had to go visit the tenants when there were problems but mostly I kept to myself too and here... well, I can't expect to really fit in here either, maybe. I'm OK here though.

But I can see why you think that isn't going to work here, everyone keeping to themselves.

South Ashfield Heights...it sounds like a forest in of itself. How people live so closely and yet so far apart is something I will never understand.

I am probably not as understanding and open-minded as I should be about your feelings and those of the others. While I myself maintain a quiet hold, it almost feel strange, as though I really should speak for this time I shall actually be heard. I am being harsh, maybe. If you wish to maintain your privacy, it is your right.

I'm not sure I could explain it either, Miss Blythe. It's just, after a while you feel like it's just best to stay out of things, and like you're not going to help any. Even if the person lives next door... I mean, I tried to be nice to the tenants but... I was just an old man who fixed things to them.

But you're not ... I mean, you're right. Here, we can't just ignore each other. We've got something to do here, even if I don't understand it yet. But... I don't know how to talk to people really. That's never been my big point and then I was alone so long.

I do hope our situation, dire as it may sometimes be, will ultimately bond us together. There is strength in friendship, in alliance, and in trust in one another. I wish you to know that you are not the 'old man who fixes things' to me, though I hardly know you.

I didn't exactly have friends, back there. Well, not after James ... was gone. It's something I'll have to get used to. I don't really know how to talk to people.

I'm not sure there's even anything I can fix, here... but thank you, Miss, I appreciate it. You're a kind person.

Charming.

*chuckles* I believe that title belongs to Lucifer, actually. My actual title is the Prince of Midnight, or... it was, back in my world. *feigns hurt* Only to talk, to pass the... time.

With such a title, would it not be the wise choice that I not communicate with you? If you wish to pass the time, why not greet your fellows in Niflheim? Jazz seems friendly enough.

I am actually not sure if I am from the same Earth as the others I saw. My home is part of "earth," but it is hidden from people who live in the "Hereafter."

The Hereafter? It sounds as though you come from a parallel dimension. I read of it in a book once. What sort of world is the Hereafter?

I do find it strange as well, how quiet everyone is. But I think that we are all...or at least that most of us are...relatively honest people, even if we are a little quiet. I'm sure that we'll come to open up to each other more and more, in time.

It is true, we do all appear to be the honest, earnest types. I am hardly concerned about turncoats.

It is unfortunate that I am always stricken by the panic of what could be.
